For most local businesses in India, the first place customers look is Google Maps. A Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the free listing that puts your shop, clinic, salon or studio on that map — with your address, phone number, opening hours, photos and reviews. If you do only one thing for local discovery, do this.
Before you start
- Use a Google account that you control long-term — not a freelancer's or an employee's personal one.
- Decide the exact business name, address and phone number you will use everywhere. Write them once and copy-paste them.
- Gather 5–10 real photos: the storefront from the street, the entrance, the inside, your team, and your best work.
Step 1: Search for your business first
Search your business name on Google Maps. If a listing already exists (Google sometimes creates one from public data), choose Claim this business instead of creating a duplicate. Duplicate listings split your reviews and confuse customers.
Step 2: Create or claim the profile
Go to the Google Business Profile page, sign in and enter your business name. Choose one primary category that describes what you are, not everything you sell — for example Hair salon, Jewellery store or Dentist. The primary category carries the most weight in local results.
Step 3: Add your address or service area
If customers visit you, add your full street address and drop the pin precisely on the entrance. If you travel to customers (a plumber, a caterer), set a service area instead and hide your address. Never list a PO box, a co-working desk you do not use, or someone else's address — that violates Google's guidelines and can get the profile suspended.
Step 4: Verify
Google needs to confirm that you really run the business. Depending on your business, you may be asked to verify by video, phone call or SMS, email, or a postcard mailed to the address. Follow the options Google shows you. Postcards can take a few days to arrive; do not request several in a row.
Step 5: Complete every field
- Hours — including special hours for festivals.
- Phone and website — the same ones used everywhere else.
- Description — what you do, who you serve and what is special, in plain words.
- Services or products — with prices where you can.
- Photos — add new ones regularly; profiles with photos earn more requests for directions and calls.
- Attributes — wheelchair access, women-led, online appointments and similar.
Step 6: Keep it alive
Reply to every review, post an update or offer now and then, and correct the hours before holidays. An accurate, active profile is what customers (and Google) trust.
What a Google profile does not do
It does not give you a page of your own, an editorial story, an offers feed or a place to showcase your work in depth. That is why many businesses pair it with one curated directory profile — see how to list your business online in India and the comparison with Google Business Profile. You can create a verified profile on The Brands List from the list your business page.
Common verification problems and how to fix them
- "We couldn't verify" or a rejected video. Re-record in one continuous take: show the street and signboard, the inside of the premises, and proof you operate there (equipment, stock, a bill book). Do not edit the clip.
- The postcard never arrives. Check that the address includes the landmark and pincode exactly as on your bill; ask the building security or the post office. Wait for the stated period before requesting another.
- The profile is "already claimed". Someone — an old employee, a web agency — may own it. Use Request access; the owner has a limited time to respond.
- Suspended after an edit. Changing the business name, address or category in a big way can trigger re-verification. Make changes one at a time and only when they are real.
Features worth switching on after verification
- Messaging and call buttons — let customers reach you from the map. Add your WhatsApp link in the website or appointment fields where permitted.
- Products and services menus — add each item with a photo, short description and price range. These appear directly on the profile.
- Posts and offers — a short update every week keeps the profile fresh; pin your current festive offer.
- Questions and answers — answer the top five questions yourself (parking, home visits, payment methods, appointments, languages spoken) before strangers answer them wrongly.
- Insights — see how many people called, asked for directions or visited your site, and which searches found you.
Keeping the profile safe
Add a second manager (a partner or trusted colleague) so you are never locked out. Do not share your own password; invite people by email with the right role. Review who has access every few months, especially after staff leave.
