If customers can't find you online, you don't have a marketing problem — you have a discoverability problem. The fix is not "be on every directory". It is being on the right two or three, with identical details, so search engines trust the signals.
Start with the free one: Google Business Profile
A Google Business Profile is free, it puts you on Google Maps and the local pack, and it is where most local discovery begins. Claim it, add your real address and hours, upload photos, and keep it updated. This is non-negotiable for every local business.
Then pick one directory that fits your business
Beyond Google, one well-chosen directory usually does more than five thin listings:
- Want maximum reach and phone-lead volume? JustDial is India's largest. Be aware that enquiries are often shared with several businesses.
- Run a service business that quotes fast? Sulekha works as a matched-lead marketplace.
- B2B or wholesale? IndiaMART is the default.
- Independent or premium consumer brand? A curated directory like The Brands List gives you one verified profile, genuine moderated reviews, direct enquiries and a backlink to your own site.

Keep your NAP identical everywhere
NAP = Name, Address, Phone number. Write it exactly the same way on every listing — same spelling, same suite number, same phone format. Inconsistent details are one of the most common reasons a business fails to rank locally.
Get links back to your listings
A link from your own website to your directory profiles — and from those profiles back to your site — builds trust for both. If your directory offers an embeddable badge, use it in your footer and email signature.
What "good" looks like after a month
- Google Business Profile claimed, verified and complete
- One category-appropriate directory profile, fully filled in
- Identical NAP on both
- Your website links to both; both link back
- A handful of genuine reviews requested from recent customers
That is the whole playbook. Do those five things properly and you will out-perform a business that is on twenty directories with a half-filled profile on each.
